The residence is a study in smart, practical design blending traditional inclinations of the client with a modern twist. From the point of view of ranch owners and cross country skiers that frequently use the surrounding easement, the home is designed to be contextually sensitive, blending in with the mature trees while utilizing natural, textured materials. The simple wood-framed roof forms eliminate issues caused by large snowfalls the area receives. The eaves shield the windows from summer heat but allow for winter heat gain. Multiple glazing types were added for solar gain or reflection depending on their exposure. Other key design elements include a see-through fireplace shared with the exterior space, hydronic heating, upgraded insulation and a flat plate solar collector to preheat the hydronic and domestic hot water systems.
